Haiti Earthquake Appeal

Trade Aid UK have been able to respond rapidly to two appeals to help the Haiti earthquake victims.  We are supporting the charity Medair, whose Emergency Response Team is working to meet the most urgent needs of medical care, clean water, sanitation, and shelter.  At the same time, a local West Sussex church approached us for emergency funding in helping a sponsored children’s Refuge in Port-au-Prince which had been destroyed in the earthquake needing immediate assistance to provide medical aid to the surviving children and staff and to assess the structural integrity of remaining buildings. This we were able to do. There continues to be urgent need for safe, clean drinking water, medical assistance, and shelter for the most vulnerable. Even before the earthquake, Haiti had the lowest Human Development Index (HDI) ranking in the western hemisphere. This was already a very poor country in great need — now with the infrastructure of the country destroyed, people’s survival is dependent on emergency aid. School building project in Agnena – Pioneer Programme

The following is the report from the internship student funded by Trade Aid UK in support of the Azafady Charity project in Madagascar:

“As part of the January 2009 Pioneer scheme, building a school in Agnena was eye-opening, rewarding and utterly, utterly magical.

Agnena is a tiny village, 4km from the market village of Mahatalaky.  Its setting is the stuff of Jurassic times: once off the dirt road, our camion navigated an expanse of grassland, traveller’s palms and the odd zebu before arriving at the bank of a river.  Agnena lies the other side: a 2-minute pirogue ride separates it from, it seems, civilisation.  And because it is so remote, and has so little, his beautiful spot is known locally as ‘fish shit’.

Before we arrived, nothing could have prepared me for the sight of children running out of a school built by Azafady in 2005, to wave at the camion.  That moment will stay with me forever: it was then that I got an inkling of the significance of this project.

When we came to Agnena, there was already a school but the building had multiple purposes.  As well as a centre of learning for the 100+ children, it acted as a cyclone shelter, town hall, mini-market and church.  A 2-room affair with a dirt floor, it leaked profusely and had no working doors or window shutters.  When it rained, you might as well have been outside for the protection it lent.

I had no idea what to expect of school building.  We were prepared for the fact that we might not finish the school itself, since our allotted time on site was reckoned to be tight in terms of what was required to get the job done.  But our group was special: with 8 boys and 7 girls; all of us keen to learn new skills and finish the school, we were off to a flying start!

We were given a demonstration of how to use tools: Malagasy shovels, chisels, saws, hammers and ‘spaghetti’ nails (our term) were the main players.  Tape measures, set squares and pens completed our list of tools – and the only materials we used were wood, paint, varnish, sand paper and cement.  Having just decorated my house in the UK, it really brought home how little you really need.

From the beginning, the locals were involved in the construction.  Digging holes was something of a challenge for some of us – this was early in the scheme and before we were lean, bronzed, digging machines! – and watching the Malagasy men dig an 80cm hole in 10 minutes, with a tiny shovel, laughing and chatting all the time was humbling.

Personally, I found the variety of activities employed during the project extraordinary.  From putting up the walls, making the benches, to rock weaving the floor, mixing cement and painting, the enjoyment never waned – even when it rained.  The enthusiasm for the school ad what we were doing was also wonderfully obvious from the children.  They watched and joined in with sanding or painting at break-times and we became friends with many of them: their singing and dancing welcomed us on our first day and continued throughout our stay.

This project is so important, for so many reasons.  Everything that can be done to ensure its survival should be.  I could write for hours about having my birthday in Agnena; doing Tai Chi with the guides at 4.30am; the camaraderie in our group; watching the stars; our welcome from the Chief de Quartier; the opening ceremony when the first apex was erected; practising Malagasy with the locals at the well; the satisfaction of completing a window shutter (EKA!); health education in the form of a hand-washing song and game with the children; the final party and dancing in the rain… even our evacuation in the face of a cyclone.  All these memories, along with the incredible team-work, sense of achievement ad pleasure on the faces of the children, contributed to make the school building in Agnena – happily, because of the school, no longer known as ‘fish shit’ – one of the most special times of my life.  The school stands proud now, and so do I.”

Land’s End to John O’Groats

So the final figure raised from last summer’s Land’s End to John O’ Groats cycle ride has reached just short of £5000.  This sum was handed over to the Pokot Rural Services Trust at a presentation held in December 2008 at West Buckland School in North Devon.  Attended by the school cyclist, their families and teachers and directors of Travel and Insure and Trade Aid UK, the money will go to fund the 24 hi-bred goats and associated husbandry training that the Pokot Trust have delivered to the remote area of Northern Kenya where they do their important work.  Those who followed the progress of the cyclists in July, through the Travel and Insure Blog reports at the time, may recall the incident in Bridgewater, which could have de-railed the charity ride, when bikes were stolen but then recovered through the efforts of the local police.  Not only did this allow the riders to complete the ride but the Bridgewater Police Force also donated £100 to the sponsorship appeal and were present at last night’s ceremony to hand their cheque to the Pokot Directors.  This is just one of the many examples of generosity that the cycle team witnessed throughout their 12 day ride, all of which contributed to the very worthwhile cause that these 14 to 17 year old riders and staff supported in the Summer of 2008.

Ethical Travel Insurance

There has been a recent boom in ‘Ethical’ products following on from the success of ‘Fair Trade’ and ‘Organic’ but is this all marketing hype designed to boost a company’s profits? There is no doubt that the use of any of these labels opens up a totally justified debate on whether they are sufficiently defined to give the general public the assurances they need. Take ‘Fair Trade’ which has now established itself as a recognised standard but what transparency does the consumer have on whether the price they pay have any bearing on the fairness claims that are made and is the premium that they are prepared to pay for such products, on prices set by the end seller, have more to do with what the market will bear than on making any real difference to the third world producer?

The selling of ethical travel insurance and financial products falls into the same category. Whether it is directed at helping those in need, say in the developing world or aimed at ecological issues, such as climate change, how companies in the financial sector face up to the growing demand for Corporate Social Responsibility will be the benchmark requirement on which they will be judged in the future.

Britons choose cost over environment

The surprise report this week is that the vast majority of British people do not care enough about the environment to make it their top priority when booking a holiday. Higher up the list comes cost. According to the independent research organisation, YouGov, just one in 100 people said their carbon footprint was the most important factor when buying a trip and for 13% of travellers, the environmental impact of a holiday was the least important consideration.

The hidden benefits of carbon offsetting, fair trade, organic, helping the third world etc, will often be overlooked if the price is not, at least in the right ball park. If the price is right, then the feel good factor of buying what you are looking for and protecting the environment or helping people in need will certainly kick in and why not as, after all, we all like to do our bit.
